CBD - we’ve heard the term used over and over when it comes to pain relief in the health industry, but it has left many people wondering… is it safe? When and how should I use it?
CBD has taken over the pain relief market in recent years, and there is a good reason why. According to Dr. Nima Gharavi of Cedars-Sinai, CBD “may play a role in hydrating the skin and have anti-inflammatory effects, so using a product that contains CBD might help with treating dry skin or certain inflammatory skin disorders.” The same concept comes into play with sore and tense muscles.
CBD ointment works as an anti-inflammatory. This is important to understand because inflammation triggers pain. As an injury occurs, or we have consistent lack of proper motion in a joint, inflammation can be triggered to try to heal the area. The inflammation then triggers pain receptors to fire. Pain receptors from the brain will try to protect the area by tensing muscles to reduce the motion to avoid further injuries. This causes reduced function, which then causes other muscles and joints to compensate, leading to increased inflammation, which triggers pain receptors. It can become an ongoing cycle if we allow it. If we can focus on reducing or stopping inflammation, we can have a better chance to stop the pain.
This is a different approach from other pain relievers… they dull the pain receptors. This is only a temporary solution. Once the pain receptors fire again the pain cycle will continue. Remember that pain is signaled by a presence of increased inflammation, so the pain will still be there if the inflammation is there. This is why we like anti-inflammatories like CBD to be a part of the healing journey.
It's also important to note that, unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive, which means using a product on your skin will not cause a person to get “high.” The CBD ointment we use in our office is from CBD Clinic which tests their products to ensure that there are no THC effects.
Now that you know how CBD ointment works, you may be wondering who benefits from the use of CBD ointment? You may have heard it’s recommended to help relieve sore and tense muscles. Did you know that CBD ointment can also help with eczema, psoriasis, arthritis and other kinds of inflammation?
Here at Pacific Wellness Chiropractic, we are excited to share that we now sell CBD ointment and our patients are LOVING the results.
“After years of constant hip pain from arthritis and multiple steroid prescriptions, I found that the CBD ointment finally relieved my pain. My arthritis doctor was so impressed that she now carries the same CBD Clinic brand in her office, to offer a natural form of pain reliever.” -M.E.
They feel immediate relief with the addition of camphor (heat) and menthol (cooling) to instantly soothe muscle tension, with the added benefit of long term effects of the CBD for inflammation.
The brand sold at Pacific Wellness Chiropractic derives their CBD strain from Charlotte's Web, which was first seen to have amazing effects on a young girl suffering from seizures (due to excessive inflammation). They do lab testing of each jar to ensure that it is a quality source of CBD and that it is THC free.
Stop by and grab a jar or pick one up at your next appointment!
